  • Laser

    What is Laser Surgery?

The miracle of Lasers are now available for your pet.  Traditional surgery with a
scalpel and scissors can bruise or crush tissue.  When we use the laser, only an intense beam of laser light touches your pet, which minimizes the pain, swelling, and bleeding often associated with surgery.

    How does Laser Surgery work?

The laser has the unique ability to vaporize or "erase" tissue.  The laser can be used to make incisions, as well as to erase unhealthy tissue. The laser is so precise that we can selectively remove only a few cells at a time.   The laser seals nerve endings, so patients are much more comfortable after surgery.  Not only does the laser kill any bacteria in its path, it also seals the lymphatics, so there is much less swelling post-operatively.

What are the Advantages to Laser Surgery?

We are proud to be one of the first veterinary hospitals to provide the many advantages of laser technology to our patients.  Now your pet can benefit from the same properties of a laser that human patients have experienced for over twenty years;  less pain, swelling and discomfort after surgery, and the ability to resume normal activities sooner.  Our practice has made this substantial investment in order to offer you the best possible healthcare for your pet.

Lasers replace scalpels in many procedures, and are useful for a wide range of conditions, spaying and neutering surgery,  cyst/ tumor/wart removals, and it is the only way we perform declaw surgery in cats.

  • Microchipping- permanent identification sytem

Now you can easily protect your loved ones before it's too late.

    What is a Microchip?
Its a technology miracle.  It is the professional way to identify your pet and its proven safe and effective.  A tiny microchip that contains a personal, one of a kind identification number distinguishes your pet as a special member of your family.

How does a Microchip system work?
Every 2 seconds a family pet is lost.  Tragically, most never make it back home because their owners didn't identify them.  Identifying your pet is vital.  With microchipping, your pet can't leave home without his/her identification.  If your lost pet is found by a shelter or a veterinary hospital, they will check him/her for a microchip with a special scanner.
When the microchip is located with the scanner, they will call the manufacturer hotline and after a quick search of the database, you,  your veterinarian, or alternate is contacted, and your pet comes home.

Lost pets are being found every day.  The microchip is directly responsible for the recovery of thousands of lost pets.

We recommend all puppies and kittens be microchipped as soon as possible.  We include a local sedative to the injection site between the shoulder blades where the microchip is placed.

  • Digital Radiology

Digital Xray Equipment has many benefits for you,  your pet, our staff and the environment.

    The benefits for you:
    - Xrays can be easily saved to a disk and sent home with you to share
    - Easy emailed to a specialist for review
    - Easy to store and transport compared to xray films.

    The benefits for your pet:
-Images can be sent to specialists via email when a faster response time is needed.   This ultimately allows your pet's health care easily collaborate and provide your pet with the best veterinary care possible.

-Since fewer radiographs are needed, exposure to radiation is greatly reduced. After the xray has been taken,  the image contrast and density can be manipulated to enhance the quality of the image, and eliminates the need for additonal xrays and costs to you.

-Fewer radiographs and no time needed for film development means less time your pet will need to be on the xray table which means less stress for your pet.

-Our team can access your pet's radiographs instantly on the computer screen.  This is extremely important in emergency situations.

    Benefits to our team here:
-Less exposure to radiation due to fewer radiographs

-More effective methods for taking xrays

-Eliminates the need for storage since digital xrays are stored on the computer

-Eliminates exposure to toxic chemicals used in developing xray films

    Benefits to our environment:
    - There are no need for chemicals to develop the film, and thus no chemicals need to be disposed of which can be toxic to the environment.

-There are no xray films, so there is less waste associated with digital xrays.

  • Surgery

Afraid of Anesthesia?  No need to be here at Waccamaw Vet.  We are all about your pet, their safety and their comfort.  Our years of research and improvements have raised the level of patient care in our community.  This is why we want you to know you can increase your pet's safety and comfort during the procedure and while under anesthesia.

We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology. All patients are carefully screened for safety, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet.

Surgical services and facilities include:  fully trained veterinary and nursing staff, to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet; heated surgery tables for greater comfort; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG and oxygen saturation monitors; intensive after surgery care.

Prior to surgery, your pet receives a complete physical exam to identify any existing medical conditions or illness that might endanger him or her health. We also recommend pre-anesthesia testing to check for any abnormalities internally which can allow us to tailor your pet's anesthetic protocol.

During your pet's surgery here at Waccamaw Regional Veterinary  Center, all patients are closely monitored until recovery is complete.  We have the industry's leading surgical monitor available. Our special anesthesia monitoring equipment reads your pet's respiration, electrocardiogram, heart rate, pulse, blood pressure, core body temperature and expires CO2 while under anesthesia.

Your pet will be given anti pain medication before and after all painful procedures and we recommend take home follow-up pain medication treatments to increase your pet's comfort while healing.

We also recommend Laser surgery- see benefits of the laser technology under "Laser" Services.

We recommend Fluid Therapy while your pet is under anesthesia.  Fluid therapy
maintains hydration, replenishing blood or fluid loss, provides electrolytes and nutrients as needed, provides a vehicle for administrating IV medications and maintains blood pressure which is very important.

We recommend ECG screening- Electrocardiogram screening allows us to check for irregular heart rhythms which can be common in veterinary medicine.  A single, inexpensive screen can alert the anesthesia team of dangerous heart irregularities before placing your pet under anesthesia.

After your pet's surgery your pet will be continuously monitored under fully recovered by our experienced surgical nurses and will keep you in constant contact of his/her recovery.  Almost all surgical patients are fully recovered from anesthesia within a few hours and are able to go home the same day.

  • Ultrasound Available

Ultrasound is most commonly used to obtain an image of soft tissue. Ultrasound is the most non-invasive diagnostic equipment used for pets.

Ultrasound is used extensively for abdominal (kidneys, liver and gallbladder) and thoracic (heart) exams. It is useful to diagnosis pregnancy, as the fetal heartbeats can not be found in early pregnancy.

Other areas, such as the eyes thyroid, breast and testicles can be viewed by ultrasound.  This modern technique provides our staff with "real time" movie of what is happening inside your pet's body.

Ultrasound produces a visual map of  the interior of the body and can be critical in diagnostic evaluation for diseases of the heart, liver, lungs, kidney, spleen, gallbladder and other internal organs.
